Summer START Keeps PCMS Students Challenged

On Friday, August 6, Port Chester Middle School students enrolled in The Guidance Center’s Summer START program delighted their families by demonstrating their new yoga, drama, cooking, gardening and photography skills. The five-week program used small group activities custom-made for the students who have behavioral or emotional issues which impact their academic performance during the school year.

While the 26 students think Summer START is a fun way to make new friends and go on field trips, The Guidance Center’s staff members know the program is helping the students improve social functioning while providing opportunities for leadership through challenging and diverse experiences. “Our overall strategy is to offer programs to support academic, social and emotional needs of the students,” says Dr. Amanda Santos-Olson, Director of School-Based Programs. “Summer START helps the students plan positive goals for the coming school year and the future.”

The Guidance Center’s school-based programs serve a total of over 1,000 students in Port Chester, New Rochelle, Mount Vernon and Mamaroneck. The Summer START program in Port Chester included Open Door Medical Center, the Port Chester Council of Community Services, and HealthBarn USA as cooperating partners
